Vintage Style Swimsuits

Twins at the Beach, 1949, Louise Dahl-Wolfe

Vintage inspired swimsuits are having a major moment. I have never seen so many great options at all sorts of price points for people who, like myself, love the bathing suits of the 1940's and 50's.

Norma Kamali Bill halterneck bikini top $175, Norma Kamali Bill high-waisted bikini briefs $175
Norma Kamali Vogue Mio stretch-lace swimsuit $385

I think vintage style bathing suits are often more flattering than modern cuts, but there's another reason why I love them. They harken back to an era when people seemed to be having more fun at the beach (or the river, or poolside, or even in the back yard) than we are now. People seemed to be less self conscious about being on display in their stripped down state, and more focused on having fun in the sun. These are styles that I can see playing beach-side backgammon in, doing cartwheels in, eating watermelon in.

Seafolly Cannes Maillot, $148
Seafolly Dolly Gingham Maillot, $168

Seafolly Natalie One-Piece, $148

Etsy is a great place to look for the real deal or reproduction vintage swimsuits:
  • I love the red 40's style striped bikini from Jitterbuggin'.
  • DaintyRascal will make you a reproduction of Marylin's iconic white bathing suit.
  • If the 70's is more your era, check out 1979 Swimwear.
